The Basics of Local Food Systems

What is a local food system?

A local food system is the term used to describe a method of food production and distribution that is grown, raised and harvested close to the consumer’s home.  Local food systems are generally associated with sustainable agriculture.

Why are local food systems important?

They are healthier for the consumer, rebuild crop diversity, strengthen the local economy, promote animal welfare and are better for the environment.

Are local food systems good for your health?

Yes! Local food systems are associated with less use of toxic chemicals, pesticides, additives and preservatives.  Those toxins have been linked to diseases and disorders, including infertility and damage to the nervous system.  Industrial food is also refrigerated and shipped from long distances, decreasing it’s nutritional value. Local food production reduces food safety risks - long distance food can potentially be contaminated on it’s journey.

Are local food systems good for the environment?

Yes! Buying locally reduces greenhouse gas emissions because much less travel - and therefore transportation - is needed. One study found that a typical meal bought from the supermarket used 4-17 times more petroleum for transport than the same meal that used local ingredients. Local farmers usually live on the land and have much more of an incentive to keep things clean, natural and fresh.

*These rules are definitely generalities - they do not apply to every local farm.  If you’re buying from a local farm, ask the farmer about their specific practices*
